Yesterday was the feast day of St Thomas More, English lawyer, statesman, philosopher, and humanist. He was beheaded in 1535 for refusing to take the oath of succession. He defended Parliament’s right to declare Anne Boleyn queen of England, but refused the oath because it said, in part, that the Crown was in charge of the church.
