God told his prophet Jonah to go to Nineveh. “I have heard of their wickedness. Tell them that I will destroy their city.”
Jonah decided to run away from God. He went on board a ship going in the other direction from Nineveh.
God sent a great storm. The sailors were very frightened. They all started to pray. Jonah said, “It is because of me that this storm has come.”
The sailors threw Jonah into the sea, and the storm stopped. But Jonah did not drown in the sea. God sent a giant fish to swallow him. Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights, and then the fish coughed him up on a beach.
Jonah asked someone what the nearby city was. “Nineveh,” said the man.
Then Jonah praised God, and promised to do what God told him.
