God sent Samuel to the home of Jesse. Jesse had seven sons. Samuel asked to meet them all. They were fine young men, but Samuel knew God had not chosen them. “Don’t you have another son?” he asked Jesse.
Jesse sent for his youngest son, who was in the field with the sheep. “This is David,” he said, “but he is just a boy.”
Samuel knew that God had chosen David to be king after Saul. He anointed David with oil, but he told all the family not to tell anyone.
David went back to the field to be with the sheep.
He looked after the sheep, and fought wolves that came to try to eat the sheep. He played for the sheep on his harp. David loved to play the harp, and he loved and trusted God.
