Hannah was very sad. She had been married for many years, but she had no children. She really wanted a son of her very own.
She went to the temple to pray to God. She told God that if he would give her a son, she would give the boy back to God to work in the temple.
Eli, the priest of the temple, prayed for Hannah too.
When Samuel was three years old, Hannah took him to Eli. “I have come to keep my promise to God,” she told Eli.
Eli promised to care for Samuel and teach him to serve God.
As Samuel grew older, Eli taught him about God’s laws and about prayer. Samuel loved to learn about God to serve Him by working in the temple.
One night, Samuel woke up suddenly. He heard someone calling him: “Samuel.” He ran to Eli. “Here I am,” he said. “I didn’t call you,” said Eli. “Go back to sleep.”
Samuel went back to bed. When God spoke again, Samuel said, “Yes, Lord, I’m listening.”
God spoke to Samuel and told him many things that were going to happen. This was the first of many times. God told Samuel the things He wanted His people to hear.
Samuel loved God very much. He talked to God, and God talked to him. He lived for a long time, and he always served God.
