Mercator got it in a nutshell I think. The use of a condom as an indication of increasing moral awareness is apparently too subtle for the rapid cycle media. But our public conversations are dominated by the limits of a news clip. As they say, the Pope doesn’t do PR, and a good thing too. I would suggest including the issue of the authority, autonomy, and moral influence of the hacks at CNN.
I’ll repeat here the comment I made on CP&S, as an another example of the same type (I think) as the Pope’s male prostitute example:
If an abortionist insisted on providing sedation for an unborn child prior to ripping it apart in the womb, that might show the first cautious steps on the abortionist’s part to a more moral understanding of the sanctity of human life. In saying this, I don’t mean to imply approval for the use of sedation of unborn children during abortion. I am commenting on the moral progress of the abortionist, not on the morality of the abortionist’s act.
