The Anchoress, Elizabeth Scalia has collected together a series of links to Catholics talking about sex – highly appropriate for St Valentines Day, I thought. Here’s a taster from one of the links:
The Church and the world are in the midst of a profoundly destructive sexual crisis. But where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more. I’m convinced that John Paul II’s TOB is an integral part of the grace that is abounding “all the more” in our world today. John Paul II’s response to the sexual revolution was basically this: “You wanna talk about sex? Okay, but let’s really talk about it. Let’s not stop at the surface. Let’s enter into the depths of the ‘great mystery’ of our creation as male and female.” When we go into the depths of this “great mystery,” we find ourselves at the very heart of the Gospel itself…
…despite popular opinion, Catholic teaching on the body and sexuality is not a list of prudish prohibitions. It is a glorious, liberating vision of human life that corresponds perfectly with the deepest and most noble desires and aspirations of the human heart for love, joy, union, and happiness. Catholic teaching on the body and sexuality puts us on a trajectory, a journey, that, if we stay the course, passes over from the human realm of love and union into the divine realm of love and union, leading us into the eternal ecstasy and bliss of the Trinity. [From the interview with Christopher West referenced by the Anchoress]

…despite popular opinion, Catholic teaching on the body and sexuality is not a list of prudish prohibitions..
What? How about, “Thou shalt not commit adultery?” What about, ” Thou shalt not masturbate?” What about, “Men shall not have sex with one another?” What about, “Don’t do that until you’re married?” What about,”Whatever you do, don’t wear a contraceptive?”
These may not be prudish, but they are certainly prohibitions.
And they are are the only “Catholic teaching on the body and sexuality” Toad ever got.
All different now, no doubt.
God knows what they’re filling their heads with these days.
This column is sex mad, these days. “Thou shalt not forget to take a cold shower!”
Can’t we forget about sex, and get back to pedophile priests?
Prohibitions? Undoubtedly – “Do what you will, but do no harm” is a little too vague for any except the saints, undoubtedly. But ‘prudish’ was and is the teacher rather than the teachings, I think.
Toad, sorry to say this – but I agree
Nothing about: “If you masturbate, it’s a mortal sin, so you can’t receive the Eucharist unless you go to Confession first”.
People aren’t allowed to decide for themselves whether they are are in MS.
Personally Toad I think we live in a time where sex is the “Golden Calf” of our age. A form of idolatry
And I think it is very destructive physically, emotionally and spiritually.
I also think it will bring about the eventual downfall of our society – and that the writing is on the wall here.
.
Sex a form of idolatry, Andrei? Very likely.
It seems we hiumans just can’t get by without some form of idolatry, can we?
For some it’s sex, for others cars, for others money, for others God.
Hard to know what to do about it, apart from just deplore it. However, as we know, all societies ultimately fall.
It could be argued that it might as well be sex as anything else.
(But not by Toad.)
“And I think (sex) is very destructive physically, emotionally and spiritually.”
In that case, Andrei, it would be wise not to have anything to do with it. A decision you have – no doubt – already arrived at.
No Toad Idolatry not sex the problem is.
Sex is how babies are made.
In first chapter of Genesis God told us to “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth”
Sex helps bond men and women so they can work together to raise their children – very good thing.
Cheapen it and degrade it, and then the bonds between men and women are weakened, then they don’t raise children together anymore, or they don’t have children at all – that is a very bad thing!
A & E were only two people – not six billion.
.
Sex is how babies are made.
Well, Andrei, that is incontestable.
(Or so Toad has been led to believe. )
However, homosexuals might well take a broader view.
Takes all sorts, you know.
..or they don’t have children at all – that is a very bad thing!
Well, Andrei, this is a Catholic blog – read, no doubt, by priests and nuns, (bishops yet!) a few of whom may not see things your way…
Perhaps Toad is onto something rather important about the apparent Catholic obsession with sex.

God Bless
It’s called projection Chris,
Because Andrew Sullivan is obsessed with sex, in his case sex with other men he thinks everybody else is too or should be. It is ever the way with narcissists.
It’s a bit like AP’s reporting of the Pope’s homily on Palm Sunday a couple of years ago – the reporter was scandalized that the Pope didn’t talk about the “abuse scandal” but rather focused on Christ’s entry into Jerusalem and the meaning of that to contemporary Christians.
Funny old world
.
“Because Andrew Sullivan is obsessed with sex, in his case sex with other men he thinks everybody else is too or should be. “
Yet more obsessive sex from Andrei.
Take your own advice, Andrei. Stop sitting staring vacantly at that computer screen and brooding over what the Pope homilized two years ago and go forth and multiply. Right now.
This planet needs more people – people like you!
